Ken Kearney Golf Design (KKGD) was engaged by Malone GC at the end of 2018 to develop conceptual plans for the development of new practice facilities and to consider a remodel to the bunkers throughout the course. The bunkers had outlived their lifespan, were holding water, causing much aggravation for both the maintenance team and the golfers, and as well as losing their shape, had become huge from years and years of edging.
In early 2019 we developed our plans, and the first stage of the works was agreed to proceed. Following a tender competition, and much deliberation by the club, DAR Golf was appointed to carry out the works.
The first phase involved the building of the new practice warm-up facility beside the 1st hole and the new short game area to the North side of the club house. The build of the new practice facility required for us to move the 8th hole to a new location to the west of the clubhouse. The works commenced in August of 2019 and was completed end of September 2019. The work was completed to the highest quality, on time and on budget.
Following the successful delivery of the first phase, KKGD did a presentation to members and the remodel to the bunkers was approved in October 2019. The work was programmed into two phases, with the first nine-hole bunkers, and some tees to be remodelled over the winter of 2019-2020 and the remained of the back nine works to be completed 2020-2021. The first phase of the works was completed and delivered on time for an easter 2020 opening.
Like any build project, we are only as good as the delivery. It is safe to say that the delivery in this instance has surpassed expectations. Many folk only remember the sunny days when the project was steaming along. But there were many, many very wet and dark days. Without fail, Brian D’Arcy and his team never relented on the program of work, stuck to the task, and delivered without quibble or complaint.
Yet again, the project was delivered on time and on budget. The work is to an exceptional standard. Such a program of work is exhaustive, requires weekly site meetings and the input of many, including the professionals. Without fear of contradiction, Brian D’Arcy, and DAR Golf, dealt with every single person in a courteous and professional manner. I believe it is absolutely critical that the process is not overburdened and that when managed correctly, it can be enjoyed by all who are engaged. DAR Golf’s greatest skill is to mange the build process, and to do it in a non-fussy and inclusive manner.

I have worked alongside DAR Golf for 20 years. I have always found them to be contractors of the very highest standard. They are always resourced correctly, arriving to various projects with the appropriate machinery and skill sets.
